Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme
Last year, the Victorian government implemented an incentive to help reduce waste in our state. This scheme rewards Victorians with a 10c deposit for every eligible can, carton and bottle that is returned to a specific recycle depot. This year, our school will be participating in this scheme. Our thanks go to Jenny Ferguson who has kindly sought bins for our school (at no cost to us) and will be dropping off the containers we collect at the appropriate recycling depots.
At Bonbeach Primary School we are encouraging our community to participate in this scheme by depositing all eligible cans, cartons and bottles in the 4 special wheely bins located next the gate that leads into the Asian garden. The bins are colour coded to the school house colours :-Lonsdale (red), Gunnamatta ( green), Torquay (blue) and Sorrento ( yellow).
The money generated from the return of these products will be donated to a charity nominated by our Environment leaders or into our Gardening program. Bonus, house points will be awarded at the end of each term according to the total amounts raised from our refunds earned. Let’s all start collecting and work together to help reduce landfill, clean up our environment while remembering those less fortunate.
A few handy tips
What can I return?
Most aluminium, glass, plastic and liquid paperboard (carton) drink containers between 150mL and 3 litres are eligible. You can keep the lids on.
What can't be returned?
There are some drink containers that are not eligible for a refund. Generally excluded containers are those that are less than 150mL and greater than 3 litres. Many of these containers can still be recycled in your kerbside bins.
Plain milk: Plain milk containers of all sizes, including plant-based milk substitutes.
Cordial or syrup containers: Concentrated or undiluted cordial or syrup containers.
Wine and spirits: Wine or pure spirits bottles made of glass, including single serve formats.
Large beverage pouches: Sachets (soft plastic or foil) above 250mL that contained wine.
Some large containers including juice and flavoured milk: Containers 1 litre or greater that contained flavoured milk, pure fruit or vegetable juice, cask wine or cask water.
Health tonics and probiotics: Registered health tonics, including small probiotic shots less than 150ml.
Cartons under 150mL: No container under 150ml can be redeemed.
Thank you for your support on behalf of the Environment Team.
