A Message from Ken and Jayne

Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted with our February Farmers’ Market.

This month, the Bonbeach Pony Club volunteered for set up, pack up and gate duties and used the funds to assist with much needed maintenance on their facilities.

The school Garden Club ran the Farmer’s Market BBQ this month and money raised will go towards a watering system and essential resources needed to run this educational program within the school.

There were 1584 adults attend the market on Sunday and children and adults were entertained by activities run by the Bonbeach Footy Club. A new addition to the market was the Butterfly Adventure enclosure which was a huge success and will be returning for the March market.

The next Farmers’ Market will be on Sunday 10th March and will be run by Year 1/2 families. We appreciate that your time is precious, but please spare some time to assist if your child is in this Level. Many hands make light work, and your child will greatly benefit from the $1000 the March market will contribute to the educational resources and programs for the 1/2 students.

A call out to all aspiring entrepreneurs. Students are encouraged to make use of produce from their home gardens to sell at the market as they have been learning about the impact of food wastage in the Gardening Program. If your child would like to collect lemons, grapefruits, passionfruit etc from their home garden and sell at the market, a stall will be provided for them to do so. Expressions of interest outlining what students plan to sell and prices must be submitted to, and approved by, Amy prior to the market.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our next market on Sunday 10th March 2024.

regards

Ken & Jayne

Important News from the Environment Team

Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme

The Victorian government recently implemented an incentive to help reduce waste in our state. This scheme rewards Victorians with a 10c deposit for every eligible can, carton and bottle that is returned to a specific recycle depot. This year, our school will be participating in this scheme. Our thanks go to Jenny Ferguson who has kindly sought bins for our school (at no cost to us) and will be dropping off the containers we collect at the appropriate recycling depots.

At Bonbeach Primary School we are encouraging our community to participate in this scheme by depositing all eligible cans, cartons and bottles in the 4 special wheely bins located next the gate that leads into the Asian garden. The bins are colour coded to the school house colours :-Lonsdale (red), Gunnamatta ( green), Torquay (blue) and Sorrento ( yellow).

The money generated from the return of these products will be donated to a charity nominated by our S.R.C. representatives. As an added bonus, house points will be awarded at the end of each term according to the total amounts raised from our refunds earned. Let’s all start collecting and work together to help reduce landfill, clean up our environment while remembering those less fortunate.

A few handy tips

  • You shouldn't crush your containers.
  • We recommend you don’t crush containers, as most refund points can't accept them if containers have been crushed.
  • Lids can be left on.
  • They will become part of the circular economy too and will be made into new products.
  • Look for the 10c mark on the drink container label. It is often located near the barcode.

What can I return?

Most aluminium, glass, plastic and liquid paperboard (carton) drink containers between 150mL and 3 litres are eligible. You can keep the lids on, we recycle them too.

What can't be returned?

There are some drink containers that are not eligible for a refund. Generally excluded containers are those that are less than 150mL and greater than 3 litres. Many of these containers can still be recycled in your kerbside bins.

Plain milk: Plain milk containers of all sizes, including plant-based milk substitutes.

Cordial or syrup containers: Concentrated or undiluted cordial or syrup containers.

Wine and spirits: Wine or pure spirits bottles made of glass, including single serve formats.

Large beverage pouches: Sachets (soft plastic or foil) above 250mL that contained wine.

Some large containers including juice and flavoured milk: Containers 1 litre or greater that contained flavoured milk, pure fruit or vegetable juice, cask wine or cask water.

Health tonics and probiotics: Registered health tonics, including small probiotic shots less than 150mL.

Cartons under 150mL: No container under 150ml can be redeemed.

Thankyou for your support on behalf of the Environment team.
