A Message from Ken and Lisa

Book Supplies

Cos, the company that provides our stationary packs has apologised for the mix ups and delays in delivery. They apparently changed their ordering software to make it more user friendly without realising it had glitches in it. They have assured us these have now been rectified.

Cos has also given the school $2000 as recompense for the difficulties. This money will be put towards resources to benefit all the students.

Uniform Price Increase

Due to Manufacturing and wholesale price increases, our uniform supplier, State Schools’ Relief has had to slightly increase the price of uniform items.
State Schools' Relief is a not-for-profit organisation that improves the lives of tens of thousands of disadvantaged Victorian students each year. Any profit made from the purchase of our school uniform supports students who may be experiencing a variety of situations such as financial hardship, neglect, family violence or family illness.

Mrs Keeley

Mrs Keeley was unfortunately involved in a car accident just prior to school recommencing this year.

She is currently in hospital recovering and will not be back this term. We are in the process of recruiting a short-term replacement Performing Arts teacher. I am sure that you all will join us in wishing Mrs Keeley a speedy recovery.

School Council Elections 2023

What is a school council and what does it do?

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within statewide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.

Who is on the school council?

For most school councils, there are three possible categories of membership:

  • A mandated elected Parent category – more than one-third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Training (DET) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not engaged in work at the school.
  • A mandated elected DET employee category – members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.
  • An optional Community member category – members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members.

Generally, the term of office for all members is two years. The term of office of half the members expires each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections.

Why is Parent membership so important?

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school.

Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.

How can you become involved?

The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant.

In view of this, you might seriously consider standing for election as a member of the school council or

  • encouraging another person to stand for election.

Do I need special experience to be on school council?

No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future. What do you need to do to stand for election?

The principal will issue a Notice of Election and Call for Nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March unless the usual time line has been varied by the Minister.

If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nominate yourself in the Parent category.

DET employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not engaged in work are eligible to nominate for parent membership of the school council at that school.

Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the Notice of Election. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt in the mail following the receipt of your completed nomination.

Generally, if there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed.

Remember

Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do

Consider standing for election to council this year

Be sure to vote in the elections.

A Message from the PE Department

Whole School

Bus costs for 2023

Due to rising bus costs, we unfortunately have to increase the price per student to all school sporting events. This includes Inter-school sport away games, Lightning Premierships and House/District events off school grounds such -Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. This will need to be paid via Compass before the consent date (swimming lessons bus cost will be included into total price of program).

Swimming

Term One: Swimming trials for the District Swimming Sports are being held this week on Thursday 9th February (Week 2) for Grades 3-6.

District Swimming Sports will be held at the Pines Aquatic Centre on Friday 3rd March (Week 5), for selected Grade 3-6 students. Once trials have been conducted, students who are successful will be notified ASAP, with a Compass notice to follow.

House Cross Country

The school House Cross Country will be taking place at the end of this term. In the past, the day has taken place at school with the Prep to Grade 2’s running a smaller course within the school grounds. They will run in their classes. This will remain the same.

For Grade 3-6’s, I am looking at moving their cross country course over to Bonbeach Reserve (Shark Park). They will run a longer course around the perimeter of the ovals at the reserve (u9/10 to run 2km and u11, u12/13 run 3km). School staff will be spread out around the perimeter to guide students. This also doubles as try-outs for the District Cross-Country team. Students will be selected on times, not top 10.

All students on the day are encouraged to come dressed up in their house colours. Reminders, alerts and consent for 3-6 students will be on Compass later in the term.

Grade 5/6

  • Inter-school Sport: This year we have over 100 grade 5/6 students. This is the biggest number of 5/6s in my time at Bonbeach. Because the numbers are high, we will be booking two buses for away Inter-school Sport days. At the moment, bus cost per away game per student will be $8.
  • As it is every year, Grade 6s will have preference in their chosen sport, with the grade 5s rotating through sports over the year.
  • The inter-school sport fixture for Term 1 2023:

17th Feb: Away v Cornish Primary School

24th  Feb: Home v Patterson Lakes Primary School

3th   Mar:  District Swimming Sports (Pines Aquatic Centre)

10th  Mar: Home v Seaford Primary School

17th Mar: Away v Seaford North Primary School

              24th Mar: Summer Lightning Premiership

  • In Terms One and Two, there is a Lighting Premiership, where every school plays each other in shortened round robin matches. Venues are yet to be decided. All grade 5/6 students will be participating. More information will be posted on Compass within the coming weeks.
  • In Physical Education lessons this term, Grade 5/6 students will be participating in an Invasion Sports unit consisting of European Handball and Lacrosse. Students will have the opportunity to expand upon their knowledge about rules, skills and game play of both sports. Students will also participate in the Beep Test, to determine their aerobic capacity.

Grade 3/4

  • It’s an exciting time in Grade 3/4, as for the Grade 3’s, it will be their first time experiencing and possibly competing at district level in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. All the trials happen in our House Sports competition over the first three terms (check Compass for updates). Grade 4 students first experienced this last year, and will be able to assist grade 3’s on the House Sport days.
  • Grade 3/4 Swimming lessons have been scheduled to take place in August this year. All information on swimming lessons will be provided on Compass towards the end of term 2.
  • In Physical Education lessons this term, the Grade 3/4 students will be participating in an Invasion Sports unit consisting of European Handball and Ultimate Frisbee. They will learn about different elements of rules, skills involved, and game play of these sports. Students will also participate in the Beep Test, to determine their aerobic capacity.

Grade 1/2

  • In Grade 1/2 this year, students will continue to learn, grow and practise their knowledge of fundamental motor skills (FMS) in sport specific and skill based lessons. Some sports that will be focused on are: Gymnastics, Basketball, Athletics, as well as Minor games, FMS activities and sessions involving throwing, catching, running, dodging, kicking, punting and target based activities will also be incorporated.
  • The Grade 1/2 students will continue to be involved in our House Sport days which are the Cross Country in Term 1 and Athletics day in Term 3 (check Compass for dates).
  • Grade 1/2 Swimming lessons have been scheduled to take place in the middle of term 2.                  All information will be on Compass towards the end of this term.

Prep

  • Welcome to all preps and their families for 2023!! Physical Education at the foundation level of the curriculum provides opportunities for students to learn through movement. The content enables students to develop and practise fundamental movement skills through active play and structured movement activities. This improves competence and confidence in their movement abilities. The content also provides opportunities for students to learn about movement as they participate in physical activity in a range of different settings, including indoor, outdoor and aquatic.
  • During the students’ first year at Bonbeach Primary School, they will have the opportunity to participate in the following Physical Education activities:
  • Practise fundamental movement skills and movement sequences using different body parts. These skills include; throwing, catching, running, jumping, dodging, balancing, skipping, kicking and trapping.
  • Cooperate with others and participate in games with and without equipment, in both inside and outside contexts.
  • Participate in the Bonbeach Primary School House Cross-Country school event.
  • Have the opportunity to partake in organised swimming lessons that are held off school grounds at Mentone Girls Grammar School. Lesson’s are 40 minutes in length and go for 8 days (commencing in the first half of Term 3).
  • Compete with their classmates at the Bonbeach Primary School House Athletics Day (Prep-Grade 2 compete in their classes and participate in minor and modified athletic events at school).
  • All school events will be placed onto Compass for parent consent and payment (if applicable). Parents are also encouraged to come along to school events and cheer on their children. I look forward to teaching your children in 2023J.

For anything PE/sport event related, please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns (Mon-Fri during school hours).
