Assembly

Our school assemblies are held each Friday afternoon at 3:00pm on the netball court. This Friday will be a special assembly with all of our 2022 student leadership positions being announced. We will be starting the assembly this Friday (18th February) at 2:45pm to allow enough time for the leadership position announcements.

Farmers’ Market

It was a hot day for our first Farmers’ Market of 2022 with many shoppers trying to beat the heat and coming along to the market early. We had 1016 adults through the gate, making it a very successful market despite the heat.

This month, our Year 5/6 parents, students and teachers, volunteered their time to assist with set up, pack up and gate collection. Thank you for you support. $500 from the fundraising from the February market will be going towards the Year 5/6 area.

Thank you to our volunteers:

Parents: Dave G, Brooke B, Jon C, Sara F, Amy D, Monique G, Kelly H, Shane C, Leigh I, Yvonne I, Scott J, Belinda L, Bryan M, Robert M-D, Ryan M, Anita P, Jody S-C, Jane W, Ramsey W.

Students (plus some past students!): Charlotte S, Asha B, Mia S, Declan W, Lachlan W, Chelsea W,

Staff: Mr Halperin, Mrs McCallum, Mr Waters

Our next Farmers’ Market will be on Sunday 13th March. Our Year 3/4 team will be organising volunteers for the March market to assist with set up, pack up and gate collection. If you are able to help out, please complete the Google form: https://forms.gle/Zw66qE3mzKPT3QiA7

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Has your child been talking about tokens and expectations in the classroom at home? At Bonbeach Primary, we follow the Positive Behaviour for Learning approach (also known as SWPBS – School Wide Positive Behaviour Support). This is an evidence-based framework that is supported by the Victorian Department of Education.

“School-wide positive behaviour support (SWPBS) is a framework that brings together school communities to develop positive, safe, supportive learning cultures.”

We have a Positive Behaviour for Learning handbook, which explains how we implement this approach at our school. You can access the handbook by clicking on this link or on our website.

We also have a Student Wellbeing and Engagement Policy which outlines our commitment to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for our students. You can access the policy here or on our website.

 School Council Elections 2022

What is a school council and what does it do?

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within statewide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.

Who is on the school council?

For most school councils, there are three possible categories of membership:

  • A mandated elected Parent category – more than one-third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Training (DET) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not engaged in work at the school.
  • A mandated elected DET employee category – members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.
  • An optional Community member category – members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members.

Generally, the term of office for all members is two years. The term of office of half the members expires each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections.

Why is Parent membership so important?

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school.

Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.

How can you become involved?

The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant.

In view of this, you might seriously consider standing for election as a member of the school council or

  • encouraging another person to stand for election.

Do I need special experience to be on school council?

No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future. What do you need to do to stand for election?

The principal will issue a Notice of Election and Call for Nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March unless the usual time line has been varied by the Minister.

If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nominate yourself in the Parent category.

DET employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not engaged in work are eligible to nominate for parent membership of the school council at that school.

Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the Notice of Election. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt in the mail following the receipt of your completed nomination.

Generally, if there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed.

Remember

Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do

Farmers' Market News

Next Meeting Tuesday 15th March @5pm

Support Needed!

Looking for a way to get more involved in the school community and support the schools fundraising efforts? Volunteer to be a part of the Farmers’ Market Committee! Volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded people and make an impact on your community. We could not accomplish all that we do without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers! It takes a lot of work to make a market run. It wouldn’t be possible without the support and aid of our dedicated volunteers and supportive community.

How can you be involved?

Become part of the committee – share your ideas, provide feedback and support us on the day of the markets when you can. Being part of the committee does not mean you have to be available for every market or take on a specific role of responsibility. The more members we have, the more we are able to share out the responsibilities.

Farmers’ Market Committee meetings are held every Tuesday following a market at 5:00pm at the school. Our next meeting will be after our March market on Tuesday 15th March. If you are interested in finding out more about getting involved, we encourage you to come along and see how it works.

Mrs Keeley

Hi. My name is Mrs Keeley and I have just started working at Bonbeach PS this year.  I am the Performing Arts teacher, and will be teaching Music, Drama and Dance.

I play piano and enjoy singing.  I have also played a little flute, saxophone and guitar in the past.

In the January holidays I went for my motorbike learner’s permit and now I enjoy going for a ride and feeling the wind in my face.  I also enjoy reading a good book, craft work and I have recently taken an interest in gardening.  I am trying to only cultivate plants that produce food that I can eat. Currently my lemons, rhubarb, herbs and raspberries are producing well. My pets include one very spoiled cat and hundreds of worms in my worm farm.

One of my favourite holiday destinations is Mallacoota. I am hopeless at catching fish, but for some reason I can always catch a fish at Mallacoota… and I don’t even use bait. Fresh fish on the barbie – yummm!
